New Freedom essays After the end of the American Civil War and the failures of Reconstruction African-Americans had finally been granted the freedom of which they had long dreamed. There was great optimism and hope amongst the former slaves as they had long been ready for independence. But the euphoria was short lived as Booker T. Washington wrote, The great responsibility of being free, or having charge of themselves, of having to think and plan for themselves and their children, seemed to take possession of them (Bailey, 6). African-Americans were quick to realize that freedom was a more serious thing than they had expected to find it (Bailey, 6). Freedom had not come with instructions and most white Americans were unwilling to help ease the growing pains these new citizens were about to experience. In fact many whites would do everything they could, including murder and terrorism, to knock the African-Americans back down every time they tried to stretch their wings. From local lynchings to seg regationist rulings by the Supreme Court almost every attempt by blacks to exercise their liberty was hindered and fought. Frederick Douglass wrote since poverty has, and can have, no chance against wealth, the landless against the landowner, the ignorant against the intelligent, the freedman was powerless (Bailey, 25). With little or no help coming from white America, including the Federal government, blacks would have to develop their own communities, institutions, and strategies to help themselves. The African-American responses to their position in an oppressive white dominated society generally took one of three forms. The first form was accommodation to the white dominated systems. However the Voodoo in its present form had been originated in Haiti when the Europeans colonized the Hispaniola. The continuous oppression of the European rulers and the misery of slavery created a common thread among those who were oppressed and in search of salvation they created a religion that wa s a mix of different faiths and practises; cumulatively referred as Voodoo (Christoph and Oberlander). The term Voodoo has evolved from the West African term Vodun and is a fusion of different beliefs that came from various African Ethnic groups namely â€Å"Fon, the Nago, the Ibos, Dahomeans, Congos , Senegalese, Haussars, Caplaous, Mondungues, Mandinge, Angolese, Libyans, Ethiopians, and the Malgaches.† (Voodoo)... Such rituals are a culmination of â€Å"prayers, drumming, dancing, singing and animal sacrifice† (Edwards, 296). Among many other animals; serpent holds the prime spot in Voodoo rituals. The importance of serpent in Voodoo rituals can be easily grasped through the fact that the word Voodoo means â€Å"the snake under whose auspices gathers all who share the faith† (Voodoo). The serpent expresses his immense power through the Papa or Maman who is the high priest. Among all other deities Bon Dieu is considered as most powerful and prime of them all. In Voodoo spirits are called Loa who on one hand controls Mother Nature and on the other determines human fate through influencing their health, financial prosperity and happiness. Some important deities in Voodoo are Damballah, Ezil, Ogu, Agwe and Legba (Michel, 63; Owusu, 43). In Voodoo ceremony the spirit or the Loa occupies the soul and body of the faithful participants and delivers his advice, warnings and desires throug h them. Voodoo is closely associated with nature and every possible natural phenomenon is considered to be the act of a Loa. In western culture there is a misconception regarding Voodoo dance that forms an important part of any Voodoo ceremony (Owusu). Such dance as described by the western experts is sexual expression. In reality they are just the opposite; these dances are spiritual expression and an attempt to get connected with the divine being. With being the first, they had the luxury to set what were the norms for the industry. The Online Bookstore industry have become a fierce business which involves discounts, varied selections and fast delivery in which all three companies are challenging each other. Buyers The consumers of this industry can be found in every corner of the population. These are mostly people who have had some form of higher education and have access to the Internet and computers. The segment of online shoppers has increased dramatically in recent years due to the convenience of shopping in the comforts of the home and the accessibility of the Internet. These developments have made it easier for consumers to log on and buy on the Internet. Consumers also tend to compare prices among the retail leaders such that buyers are able to buy products with very big  discounts compared to ones bought in actual retail outlets. The Oppression of Females in Advertising :: essays papers

Our society is a complex collection of institutions, status, roles, values, and norms, and the best way to understand and learn about them is through the use of cultural artifacts. These can be anything from music to art to literature, or as in the example of this discussion, the modern day creation of advertisement as seen in women's magazines. As Homo Sapiens moved from the hunter - gatherer way of life to industrial society , it was necessary to construct a framework for living so that such a concentrated number of people could exist together. This framework as come to consist of a myriad of expectations based on values and norms in the form of roles status and institutions. Desirable behavior is sought by people throughout the country based on how one is brought up and the expectations one is bombarded with on a daily basis. These expectations are reflected in every part of our culture and are used by people so as to know how to act in any given situation. The main examples are: the family, education, health and medicine, religion, and the law. I have found that certain mediums reflect the expected roles in these institutions better than others. I originally focused on gender roles as a depiction of stereotypical behavior as reflected by advertising especially the portrayal of women, but I discovered that there were other stereotypes being perpetuated as well that were just as institutionalized if not just simply less noticed or studied. Therefore, although this argument will focus on the depiction of females and the female role in advertising. It will also mention the general use of American values , norms, and institutions to influence consumers. An institution is defined as "a stable cluster of values, norms, status, roles, and groups that develop around a basic social need" with a status being a person's position in society and a role being the behavior expected from that, and a value being a socially shared idea of what is good, right, and desirable and a norm being the behavior expected from those ideas. When people begin to form certain expectations in life there begin to be formed stereotypes. People recognize them universally and use them to form opinions and act or not act in a certain way when they are confronted with a situation or person.

They play a major role of gathering information about a pupil’s social, emotional and behavioural development in school. Conduc ting interviews with the student as well as making classroom observations. They will conduct interviews with senior members of staff and parents on strategies that will benefit the child in school. Early Years Consultants: offer support and advice to teachers and other members of staff in school.They work closely with both children and parents to identify, assess and respond to a child’s additional need and to ensure that the appropriate intervention is given to that child in order to develop their learning within school. Youth Workers: promote the personal, educational and social development of young people aged between 13~19, they respond to the needs and interests of young people and attempt to resolve issues involving health awareness and education by developing positive skills and attitudes within a young person..Youth Workers have an influential role in empowering young individuals to take on issues that are affecting their lives. Police: hold debates in schools to chil dren and young people on issues such as knife crime and anti-social behaviour in order to discourage children from imitating that behaviour. They hold open discussions in order for the child or young person to give their opinions and views. Youth Offending Teams: will offer support to young people in education who are at risk of offending, they liaise with schools and the Education Department when a young person is experiencing difficulties at school.They will often assist with school work and enable communication between the young person, school and their families. All adults within the school should aim to create an optimistic and positive environment that holds high but reasonable expectations of every child who attends the school, emphasize the significance of being respected as an individual within the school.Encourage, through example, truthfulness and politeness while encouraging children to have relationships based on fairness, kindness and understanding of the needs of the other children within the school. Evaluate methods of communicating a schools ethos, mission aims and values? The ethos and mission of a school is often referred to as the same thing, however, they are both very different. The mission of a school is based upon what the school intends to achieve in a more physical and academical way as set out by the head teacher. This is often seen as a motto and slogan as you enter a school.The Ethos of a school is more related to the beliefs and feelings of a school. The Ethos of the school should be recognisable when entering the school environment as it is part of the nature and daily practice of the staff and pupils who work there. The ethos is set out for the whole school to be aware of and is reinforced through daily activities. It enforces that children’s safety is paramount and with the purpose of children are at the centre of everything. The aims of the school are set out by the head teacher in partnership with the parents, staff, governors and he community which should provide all members of the school community with a safe and respected environment which is paramount in obtaining a successful learning environment. The aims for the children in my work setting are to increase each pupils understanding of the world around them and to provide each pupil wit h the appropriate balance of both challenge and support in the learning, to provide for the spiritual, moral, intellectual and physical development of the pupils regardless of their disability, gender, race or ethnic background.
